[Crop Note] current corn stage, R6 (12 Sep 2023) at Champaign in IL, USA

Now, corn is progressing toward maturity, currently at the R6 stage, known as Physiological Maturity. This marks the final stage of kernel development, and the corn growth stages are indicated as follows:

[Note 1] Corn growth stage

R1 - Silking Stage:
This stage marks the beginning of reproductive growth. The tassel at the top of the corn plant releases pollen and silks emerge from the ear shoot and catch the pollen to facilitate fertilization. Silks turn brown and dry as fertilization occurs.

R2 - Blister Stage:
Corn kernels appearing like blisters on the ear are still developing and are filled with a watery, clear fluid.

R3 - Milk Stage:

The kernels continue to grow and fill with a milky-white liquid and this is a critical stage for kernel development.

R4 - Dough Stage:
Kernels become doughy in texture and start to accumulate starch, and kernel development progresses rapidly.

R5 - Dent Stage:
The kernels start to dent or dimple near the crown, and this is a visible sign of maturing kernels. Starch continues to accumulate, and the ear is still developing.

R6 - Physiological Maturity (Black Layer Stage):
This is the final stage of kernel development. A black layer forms at the base of each kernel, indicating physiological maturity. At this point, the corn plant has completed its growth, and the kernels are ready for harvest.
The moisture content of the kernels decreases significantly.

In this stage, the average kernel moisture content ranges from 30% to 35%, but this can vary considerably depending on the hybrid and environmental conditions. Safe storage typically requires moisture levels to be reduced to 13% to 15%.
