Hemp seed coat is the outer protective layer of a hemp seed

Hemp (or industrial hemp) is Cannabis sativa which is a member of the Cannabaceae family. Actually, Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica are two of the primary subspecies or varieties of the Cannabis plant, each with its own set of characteristics. It’s important to note that while hemp is a variety of Cannabis sativa, not all cannabis is hemp. The name “cannabis” refers to a genus of flowering plants in the family Cannabaceae, which includes both hemp and marijuana. While both Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica are subspecies of the Cannabis genus, they differ in several ways that can be used to differentiate them.

It is known that Cannabis Sativa is typically taller and have narrower leaves with long, thin fingers. They tend to have a more open and airy growth structure, while Cannabis Indica is generally shorter and bushier with broader leaves that have shorter, wider fingers. They have a denser and more compact growth structure.

Cannabis Sativa tends to have a longer flowering time, often 10 to 16 weeks, and they can grow quite tall. They are better suited for outdoor cultivation in warmer climates, while Cannabis Indica usually has a shorter flowering period, typically 6 to 8 weeks, and they are better suited for indoor cultivation or in regions with a shorter growing season.

THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol)

THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the largest chemical component of cannabis which is psychoactive.

THC (C₂₁H₃₀O₂)

In general, Cannabis Sativa tends to have higher THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) levels compared to Cannabis Indica. Although this characteristic is one of the broad distinctions between the two subspecies, it’s important to note that the THC content can vary widely among individual strains, and there are exceptions to this generalization. Some indica strains can have high THC levels, and some sativa strains can have lower THC levels.

The effects of a cannabis strain are influenced not only by THC levels but also by the presence of other Cannabidiol (CBD) and terpenes. CBD is the second-largest component in cannabis. It is known that Cannabis Indica tends to have a higher level of CBD.

CBD (C21H30O2)

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant. It does not produce the “high” or intoxicating effects associated with THC. CBD is being researched for its potential therapeutic properties, including pain relief, anxiety reduction, anti-inflammatory effects, and more.

The term “Industrial Hemp” is often used to distinguish these low-THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) varieties of Cannabis from those with higher THC levels, which are often referred to as marijuana. In other words, industrial hemp is characterized by having a low THC content compared to marijuana. By legal definition in the U.S., industrial hemp contains less than 0.3% THC (by dry weight), which means it does not have significant psychoactive effects.

Industrial Hemp is a type of Cannabis Sativa plant that has been bred to contain high levels of CBD and very low levels of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol).

Marijuana: This type of Cannabis sativa is specifically cultivated for its high THC content, which can vary depending on the strain, growing conditions, and harvesting time. Typically, THC content in marijuana can range from 5% to over 20%.

■ Industrial Hemp: In contrast, industrial hemp is bred to have very low THC levels. In the United States, for example, federal law defines industrial hemp as any part or derivative of the Cannabis sativa plant with a THC concentration of no more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis.

Hemp seed coat is outer layer of a hemp seed

The hemp seed coat (a.k.a the hull or shell), is the outer protective layer of a hemp seed. It serves to protect the inner hemp heart from environmental factors. Hemp seeds are typically harvested for their nutritious inner parts, which are rich in protein, healthy fats, and various beneficial compounds, while the outer seed coat is often removed or hulled before consumption to make the seeds more palatable. Hemp seeds with the hull intact are sometimes referred to as “whole hemp seeds,” while those with the hull removed are called “hulled hemp seeds” or “hemp hearts.”
